Difference between Kanchipuram Saree and Normal Silk Sarees


Kanchipuram silk is a type of silk saree manufactured in Kanchipuram regions of the traditional state of Tamil Nadu. These are worn on special occasions like a wedding or traditional rituals. Mostly, women from Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and other southernmost states wear the Kanchipuram sarees. Recognized as a Geographical indication in the year 2005 and 2006, Kanchipuram sarees have become prominent worldwide and almost 5,000 families are indulged in producing the same.

Generally, silk processing techniques include degumming and reeling. These were taken from Chinese technology and more than 95% of the raw silk is produced in major states like Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Jammu, and Kashmir.  Mysore silk sarees are some of the very famous outwears in India and neighboring nations. These are made from Mulberry silkworms and more than 70% of silkworms are used in the production process. Whereas Kanchipuram sarees are made from pure mulberry silk.



Currently, Mysore silk sarees are being manufactured with care and utmost love that has great value. One of the distinct features of Mysore silk sarees are made from 100% fine silk accompanied by 65% silver, 0.65% pure gold and pure gold zari.While Kanchipuram sarees are made from the South Indian silk, Silver zari from the legendary Gujarat state.

In order to prepare Mysore silk sarees, a complicated process to select the finest quality of silk yarn and making a flawless and glamourous saree for the event. These sarees are vibrant and magnificent. Kanchipuram sarees are made from warp frame fabric with almost 60 holes. Moreover, 240 threads are used and 250 to 3000 threads in making the Kanchipuram sarees. Also, the pallu or the border of the saree is made of woven separately and interlocked neatly and precisely.

The weight of the Mysore silk saree is around 400 to 600 grams and weavers make use of natural pigments to dye the same. These vibrant and heavy are mainly prepared from the figurines and scriptures from ancient temple colors and eye-catching designs. The pallu or the border of the saree has contrasting shades and also different innovative designs. Dry cleaning is the most convenient way to maintain the beauty of the saree and it costs around Rs. 2,000 onwards. Kanchipuram sarees vary widely on the cost part which depends upon the intricacy and detailing of the work and stitching, colors used, pattern maintained like gold zari. Kanchipuram sarees are the best twisted with different kinds of colors and threads are the most exquisite outwear one can even have.
